About

The Research Center for Child and Adolescent Poverty was launched in 2015 to tackle the poverty among children and adolescents in Japan from the academic perspective .  Researchers from various academic fields such as Social Welfare, Education, Sociology, and Psychology have joined together to carry out interdisciplinary research on child and adolescent poverty. Furthermore, in collaboration with international researchers all over the world, this center is expected to become a core base for the promotion of child and adolescent poverty research in Japan.

Another purpose of the center is to provide necessary technical assistance to local governments. The “Child Poverty Policy Promotion Law”, established in 2013, requires the central government and municipalities to enact child poverty countermeasures, and at the same time, mandates the local governments to conduct surveys to examining the state of poverty among children. The Center, by collaborating with local governments, utilize expertise developed in academia to conduct such surveys as well as to train local officials.  We also provide feed back to the national and local govrenments in Japan regarding findings from the academic community.
